I just had a discussion on this...Thanks Dr. Howell. I just had a discussion on this very topic with my extended family, highlighting some of the points you make here. I especially appreciate your insights on what it does to us "North American saviors." This kind of North-South relationship model that we grow up with as church kids leaves an ingrained superiority/savior complex that is difficult to confront and unravel. Our churches need to reflect seriously on how we engage so that we do not have a distorted understanding of who we are and who "they" are. Hopefully we can then truly work together to reverse systemic injustice in a way that gives the dignity that each human being deserves.
